For Grandma

Each life is different, precious and dear,

And follows a course quite unique,

But yours, Grandma Dodie, inspires us all -

A truth that prompts me to speak.

Through many years and many tears

You’ve worked and played and grown -

And it’s time that someone thanked you

For the example that you’ve shown.

In a strong Ohio background

You learned of honesty and labor –

How to reach and how to teach

And how to be a neighbor.

You lived through trials we’ll never know

With bread more dear than money -

You helped a war-weary land to turn

Into one of milk and honey.

You joined the Hoover work force

In nineteen forty and one

And for 35 years you showed them all

Just how things should be done.

You spoke your mind not only

For yourself, but also others,

And when you spoke you represented

All your union brothers.

Uncle Sam called a special man

Who came to know your heart,

As he gazed upon your picture

Each day you were apart.

When that awful war finally ended

And the two of you could marry,

The greatest gift to all of us

Was our brand new Grandpa Harry!

Age took its toll as years flew by

And God called Grandpa back

To Heaven to prepare a place

For us - if we keep on track.

Your faith has taught our family

That compassion, truth, and love

Can serve to carve a niche for us

When we join Him up above.

The strength and common sense you show

Will help us all succeed

In being more like our Grandma

Armed with everything we’ll need.

I hope that you have understood

For I’ve tried to say it clearly

Grandma, we are grateful for all you do

And will always love you dearly.
